Many people now days use other forms of exercise to get and stay fit. Because running is a more high impact type of exercise, it can sometimes be a little hard on the knees and other parts of the body.
One low impact type of exercise is to just simply walk up a hill. This will get your heart rate up very well, and does not produce a large amount of impact on the knees or other parts of the body.
Walking up and down stairs is another way to get good cardiovascular exercise with low impact.
Another good form of exercise is to play tennis. If you can just walk, or even drive your car down to the local tennis court and play tennis for about a half hour three times a week, you will be raising your heart rate substantially and having fun at the same time. That’s if you like tennis, which I do.
Jump rope is another form that will raise your heart rate to an acceptable level. If you do this you will need to do it for at least twenty minutes for it to be beneficial for your heart.
Remember that if you are first starting out on any of this, you will need to work your way up to the twenty-minute target gradually, to avoid injury.
As you can probably see, exercise is not just one single thing, it can consist of many different methods, from walking to bicycling, or from jogging to jump rope.
The idea is to find a particular activity that you enjoy doing, and then spend three or four days a week doing it.
One of the activities that I enjoy is going to a mountain close to my house, and hiking up the 2.5-mile long gravel road going up the mountain.
This hill has spots that are pretty steep, and I will usually wear a 20- pound backpack while hiking up this hill. This usually takes about 1.5- hours to do and gives me a very good workout.
So, go out there and find an activity that you can enjoy doing, and put your heart and soul into it.
