Not long ago I had a job opportunity that required me to be in top shape, but I had been a truck driver for about 12 years and was not in very good shape.
I could have just decided that it would be too much trouble to try, or I could just go ahead and try to do it. I tried and was amazed at how easy it was to get my body back in shape.
Now I'm not saying that it is easy to do, but it is not as hard as you may think.
The job that I was going to try out for was a government security job, and it required that you run a mile in eight minutes, and a prone to running dash in eight seconds or less, (prone meaning that you lie face down on the ground, and jump up to a running position).
I could not even run half a mile let alone a mile, so this was going to be a lot of work.
I started out going to the local track and running two laps around the track at a slow but even pace, and continued this every day for one week.
I noticed after about one week that it was getting a little easier each time. Once I was able to make two laps around the track in about four minutes, I increased it to two and a half laps; my body was getting in shape.
Now it was time to increase the level of exercise.
I then started to do push ups and sit ups along with my stretching before the run, and instead of driving down to the track I simply started walking.
This prepared my body for the run by getting my blood moving, and warming up my muscles. This made the run a little easier and more enjoyable.
In no time at all I was running four laps around the track and my time was improving. I continued on this trend until I could make four laps in less than eight minutes, and then I started running for one and a half miles every day.
When the time came to take the test for the job, I was able to run the mile in seven and a half minutes.
The time that it took me to be able to do this was a little over one month; this is how quickly the human body can adapt to physical exercise.
If a person like myself who drove trucks and got very little exercise for 12 years can do it, I think just about anyone can. As with anything though if you have been inactive for a while, you will need to work into it slowly, as I did.
