I of course love to run, but that is not the only form of exercise that there is to do. Walking is a very good form of exercise that anyone can do, and for some it is much more enjoyable than running.

The main thing that you should keep in mind with walking is that you will need to walk for at least two miles if possible. You may need to work up to this slowly though, depending on your physical condition.

Any type of exercise that brings your heart rate up for an extended period is good. Everyone has what is called an exercising heart rate zone.

The Exercising Heart Rate Zone

To get this you need to take your age, subtract it from 220, and you will have your maximum heart rate. So lets say that you are 40 years old, subtract that from 220 and you have 180; this is your maximum heart rate.

Next take the maximum heart rate, which is 180 and calculate 65% of that. This will be the lower of your exercising heart rate.

Next calculate 85% of 180, and this will be the upper end of your exercising heart rate. That would make your exercising heart rate at between 120 and 157.

If you are exercising and your heart rate is in this range, you are getting the most out of your exercise regimen. So now with all of that technical stuff out of the way, lets get to some of the ways that you can get your exercising in.

Walking Daily To Get In Shape

Like I said before, walking is one of the better ways to workout, without overdoing it. If you have not been doing any exercise for a number of years then walking will get your heart rate up pretty well all by itself.

Then as you get in better shape you can increase this more and more, eventually moving up to running in a marathon, if you want to.

Walking On An Incline

Walking up and down stairs is another way to get a good cardiovascular workout. A very good way to do this is to go to your local high school and walk up and down the bleachers for a little while.

With any cardiovascular workout you need to raise your heart rate for at least twenty minutes, and walking up and down the bleachers at the school is a low impact way of doing this.

If you happen to be in a rural area you can find a dirt or gravel road that goes up a hill for a mile or more and walk up and down that road a couple of times a week, or more.

Always remember to stretch before each workout though, and don’t overexert yourself.

The main thing to remember is that all you need to do is get out there and walk, jog or even play tennis at least a couple of times a week, and you will notice that you feel better and have more energy than you ever had before.
