There has long been an association between the sun, and skin cancer. Now it seems that tanning beds can be a dangerous tool also. Tanning beds produce the same types of ultraviolet light that the sun produces. These are UVA and UVB light. UVB has long been associated with sunburn, while UVA is a deeper penetrating light than UVB, and is suspected of causing skin cancer also.

Isn't The Sun Good For You

Yes the sun can be good for you in light to moderate amounts. Sunlight on your skin causes your body to produce Vitamin-D. This has been shown to help fight skin cancer, as well as other health benefits. The problem is that the more sun you get, the less effect Vitamin-D production has to counteract the damage sunlight does to your skin. As a general rule of thumb, avoid the sun during peak hours in the summer. That would mean to stay indoors between 10 AM and 4 PM. It does not take much sunlight for your body to produce the Vitamin-D that you need, so a few hours of sunlight in the morning and evening will be plenty.

Who Is The Most At Risk From Sun Exposure

There are six different skin types, and each one has it's own risk factor. Types one and two are the most at risk. The different types are as follows.

  • Type One: Always burns, but never tans.
  • Type Two: Burns easily, tans very little.
  • Type Three: Burns sometimes, but can tan gradually to a light brown. (Caucasion).
  • Type Four: Hardly ever burns, always tans well. (Olive skin).
  • Type Five: Rarely ever burns, tans very well. (Brown skin).
  • Type Six: Never burns, deeply pigmented. (Black skin).
If you burn very easily, then being in the sun for long periods of time are more of a danger for you.

Why Can Tanning Beds Be Harmful

Tanning beds use the same type of light wavelength that the sun produces. These wavelengths have been linked to the occurence of skin cancer. While it is true that tanning beds use UVA light which has less tendency to cause a sunburn, that does not mean that it is any less harmful. A simple rule of thumb is, too much UV light of any kind in large quantity is not good.

Alternative To Tanning Beds

If you are looking for a different way to get a good tan, without the harmful effects of UV light radiation, then you may want to consider sunless tanning towels as one option. The sunless tanning towels are applied to the areas that you want to tan, and within a few hours of application, you will begin to see a natural tan appear. There are no known side effects of this product, and no UV light to damage the skin. This is a good alternative to excessive sun exposure, and tanning beds.
