Most of us know what varicose veins are, they are the unsightly blue lines in a persons legs. Not only are they unsightly, they can also become painful at times, and possibly lead to a condition commonly referred to as “deep vein thrombosis” or venous thrombosis.

Venous thrombosis is the medical term for a blood clot. There are many problems that can occur from having clots in the legs, but one of the more serious effects is that these clots can become dislodged and travel to the heart causing a sudden heart attack.

What Causes Varicose Veins

The cause of varicose veins is that when you are standing on your feet for long periods of time, your blood has to be pumped throughout your body against gravity.

The veins in your legs have small valves that restrict the backward movement of blood in the veins. If those valves become damaged, blood can pool up in the veins and cause the veins to sag or droop.

This in turn can cause the veins to seep blood to the outside of the vein causing the appearance of spider veins.

The Difference Between Spider Veins And Varicose Veins

Spider veins are very similar to varicose veins, but are smaller in diameter, and instead of waving, or meandering up the leg they will branch out in different directions.

Spider veins are usually more of a red color, and may appear on the legs or face whereas varicose veins will be more of a blue color, and will appear primarily on the legs.

The Treatment Options

There are many treatments for both varicose, and spider veins many of which involve surgery of some kind, and then there are cosmetic treatments which are much less invasive.

The cosmetic treatments involve using creams or lotions to promote strengthening and thickening of the skin to make the veins less visible. While the skin is being strengthened, the lotion also penetrates the skin to repair the veins, and stop the seepage of blood out of the veins.

The active ingredient of most of these creams and or lotions is Vitamin-K. Vitamin-K has been shown to help repair these damaged veins, and strengthen the skin in the process.

The length of time that it takes for these creams to work depends on the severity of the problem the person is facing. Some people have seen results in as little as 12 days, whereas others it will take as much as 6 to 8 weeks.

Clearly the best way to get rid of varicose, and spider veins is to use the least invasive method, and the creams seem to be an excellent alternative to surgery.
