There are many different ways to get a tan, some good and some not so good. We will discuss four different ways to get a tan without the sun, and some of the benefits, and drawbacks of those methods.
Bronzers can come in many forms, and are basically just a lotion, cream, or powder that is applied to the skin the same way that you would apply makeup. The ingredients in these products temporarily color the skin, and give you a tanned "look". The drawbacks to this method are; they can streak if your skin gets wet, much like makeup does. They are also very temporary in that they can simply be washed off with a little soap and water. If you are looking for a longer lasting tan, this is probably not a good option for you.
Some may want to use tanning accelerators to get a quick tan. These are generally sold as lotions or pills. They are said to contain an amino acid called tyrosine that reportedly increases the production of melanin, thus increasing the speed of tanning. This has not been proven, and there are no known reports on the long term effects of these methods.
Another method is to go into a booth, and sit under tanning lamps that use UV light to tan your skin. The problem with this approach is that it uses the same thing to tan your skin as the sun uses. The people that use this approach may say that it is safer because it only uses UVA and not UVB. The light that these booths emit is mostly UVA, which is not nearly as damaging to the skin, but they also emit small amounts of UVB, which is very damaging to the skin. Long term use of this method can lead to skin damage, and possibly skin cancer.
The last category is tanning towels. Tanning towels are just towels that come in a package, and are moisturized with ingredients that temporarily tan the skin. The towel is removed from the package, and applied to the skin much the same way as a bronzer. The tan will usually begin to appear in one or two hours, and will last for around a week in most cases. This is one of the more easy methods to use, less of a mess than bronzers, and longer lasting. Because you are not being subjected to UV light using this method, it is also the safer alternative.
