Children with Attention Deficit Disorder can be difficult for parents to raise at times. Children With ADD may have trouble understanding directions, and children with ADHD or attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, will be in constant motion as most children are, but seem to be unable to focus, and calm down. This can take special attention from the parents of children with ADD/ADHD
The rules and what is expected of these children should be no different than what is expected of any other children. It will take more attention, and a lot of consistency to get the same results, but will be worth the effort.
One thing that a child with ADD/ADHD needs is to know what is expected of them, and the consistent consequences of non-compliance. Sit down and organize a list of house rules, Wright them down, and go over them with your child. The rules can be about any behavior that you expect in your house such as,
Once this list is complete, go over the rules with your child, and require their attention while doing it.
After you are confident that they understand the rules, set up a list of the consequences if they do not adhere to the rules. The discipline that you use is to your discretion, but should be consistent and enforced, to have any effect at all.
When giving your child directions, make sure they understand them. Have your child look you in the eye when you are talking to them. Talk in a calm clear voice, so they can hear what you are saying. After giving them the instructions, have them repeat them to you, this will let you know that they heard and understood you. One thing that has very little effect is yelling and screaming. All directions should be given in a calm, but stern voice to let them know that you are in control. Yelling and screaming only reinforces to them that you have lost control.
Another important thing for any child is praise for good behavior. If a child is constantly criticized for bad behavior, and never rewarded for good, they will see no point in exhibiting good behavior. When your child completes a project or chore that they were told to do, give them a good pat on the back, and tell them you are proud of what they did. This will reinforce the good behavior. After repeatedly showing you that they can accomplish what is asked of them, you may include a reward for following directions. This will further encourage good behavior.
As most who have a child with ADD/ADHD know, schoolwork can be a real chore. Set up a time for homework, and provide regular intervals for breaks during that time. The Place to do homework should be away from distractions such as the television, or other children playing. This will allow the child to focus on the task at hand, and not have to deal with other things that will take their mind off of what they are doing.
There are a few dietary supplements available that can help people focus their attention better. Here are a couple of types to be considered.
