Clinical Depression is a tricky condition because during periods of depression we are very susceptible to outside influence. If we see a commercial on TV listing symptoms of Clinical Depression when we are feeling depressed, we notice that many of the symptoms fit in perfectly to how we are feeling at that moment. This is why it's so important to know the difference between just a depressing day, and Clinical Depression.
You wake up one morning and just don't feel like doing anything, you feel sad for what appears to be no reason, and you snap at your friends and family in frustration.
We all have days like these and they are nothing to be concerned about. However, many people allow these feelings to dominate their entire day, but you don't have to.
Just take an hour or so and think through what may be upsetting you. If you discover that there is actually something bothering you, then try talking to someone about it or confront the problem directly. If you simply cannot figure out why you are in such a terrible mood then you will need to focus on changing that mood. In some cases, simply taking a nap will help improve your mood!
There are two options when dealing with your mind... You either control your mind, or it controls you.
The option of letting your mind control you is very dangerous and can lead to Clinical Depression. People that choose this option usually allow their minds to focus on negative thoughts and emotions. This can be very destructive and can only lead to more depressing thoughts.
The other option is when you are controlling your thought and emotions. This means that you can change your mood by force of will! If you are feeling a bit snappish, then you can refocus your thoughts on another aspect of the day to alter your mood.
As much as I would like to say that I am always in control of my mind, sometimes I will slip and allow myself to dwell on negative thoughts. The trick is to recognize that these thoughts are destructive and to correct them when you notice them.
To alter your mood, simply get deeply involved in your work, or if you have the day off then find something that you enjoy doing and do it until your mood is better! Simple right?
For those with Clinical Depression, it's not so simple, because they have developed a habit that allows the mind complete control and this habit is a very tough one to break!
Clinical Depression, also known as unipolar or major depression, is a state of depression so severe as to require clinical intervention by a health care professional. It has several treatment options, including psychotherapy, antidepressant medication, and electro convulsive therapy. When five or more symptoms listed on a standard depression quiz are present for at least two weeks, but tend to continue for four to six months, the mood disorder is considered clinical / major depression.
That is the technical definition of Clinical Depression. As you can probably tell, Clinical Depression can be a very serious and dangerous condition that needs to be controlled as soon as possible.
There are a few ways to fight back against Clinical Depression one of which is simply avoiding situations that trigger it. You must keep your mind occupied at all times until it becomes a habit and you no longer have to force your mind to avoid the triggers.
Many people think that if they go to a psychiatrist, they are admitting that they are losing their minds. This couldn't be further from the truth! Talking about your terrible thoughts and feelings with someone can help you face them and ultimately deal with them.
Remember to be positive and maintain control of your mind and if you simply can't beat your Depression alone, don't fear visiting a psychiatrist.
