So there is a speaker at the front of the room talking about methods to accomplish a very important task, but you find your mind wondering as they are speaking. You immediately refocus your attention on the speaker, and think to yourself, "WHAT DID THEY SAY?!"
Sounding familiar? Well chances are you aren't the only one in the room that this is happening to because the average attention span of an adult is about 20 minutes.
Well, technically it's the speaker job to keep the audience engaged in what he or she is talking about by taking periodic breaks, telling a story, and so on. However, this doesn't mean that what they are speaking about isn't important. Your job as a member of the audience is to remain engaged to the best of your abilities and so your goal is to get your attention span above 20 minutes.
If you do this, you will be one-up on the competition and will be able to remember more of what was said and put it to use, rather than trying to remember or borrowing some one else's notes.
Like any other part of your body, your mind should be exercised as often as possible.
Increasing your memory and your observation skills is a great place to start improving your attention span. One way of doing this is by using a picture with several items in it. Look at the picture for about a minute and then look away from the picture and recall as much of the picture as you can. Try to visualize the picture in your mind and place the object where they were in the picture.
Many police officers do this exercise so that their minds are sharp when they are on the scene of a crime. That way they can immediately pick out objects that could be clues.
You should practice this exercise at least once a day to sharpen your mind. You will begin to notice details that others don't and remember more about what you have seen.
To keep yourself engaged as you listen to a speaker, try to take notes that you can refer back to. While note taking may not keep your attention on the speaker as much as you may like, it will help you to recall what was said. This will allow you to run through the notes any time you wish.
If you can bring an audio recorder along, you can set it up to record the speaker and you can focus your full attention on him/her. When the speaker is finished, if you missed any parts of what was said, simply play them back. While playing back you should also write the important points that you will need to remember down to commit them to memory.
Another technique that may help is visualization. Try to visualize what the speaker is saying as they are saying it. Many people find this method distracting, but if you can visualize what is being said effectively and without losing your attention on the speaker, it's a powerful method.
If you need a little help while you build your focus, there are some great products for both adults and children.
