Nearly one century ago, a prominent doctor of the time, Dr. John Harvey Kellogg founder of the Battle Creek sanitarium in Michigan stated, "90% of the diseases of civilization are due to improper functioning of the colon".
With many of the prominent naturopaths of today, it is commonly acknowledged that many health problems can be traced back to an improperly functioning colon.
The colon, or Large intestine is a very important organ of the human body. Lets take three facts about the intestines into consideration.
Number one; if stretched out to their full-length, the two (small and large intestine) together would be about 30 feet long.
Number two; the total nutrient absorbing area of the intestines equal about the same area of a tennis court. It has been estimated that the villi and microvilli in the small intestine increase the total surface area by up to 60,000%.
Number three; with the large amount of surface area in the intestines, they are capable of storing a vast amount of partially digested fecal matter that sits and putrefies over time.
With the absorption qualities of the intestines in mind, it would not be hard to understand how having putrefied matter in them would not be very healthy, as this matter would be very toxic, or poisonous to the body.
As this matter sits in the colon, the toxic by-products are absorbed through the intestinal walls, and are circulated throughout the body, via the blood stream. This can cause all types of health related problems.
Some of the things that have been associated with this, and have been reportedly resolved from a colon cleanse are; cessation of migraines and joint pain, fewer, and less sever colds, resolution of sinus problems, and improvements in energy levels and mental focus.
With these toxins being circulated throughout your body, they can have an impact on other organs.
Your kidneys on average process about 200 quarts of blood per day to sift out 2 quarts of waste and extra water. Over time the toxins in the body are filtered through the kidneys, and become trapped there in the form of kidney stones.
If the colon is filled with putrefied matter, the toxic waste from that matter may be absorbed through the lining of the colon, and into the blood, which then has to be filtered by the kidneys. The result can be, kidney stones, kidney disease, and ultimately possible kidney failure.
As you can see, the colon has a lot to do with your overall health. Maintaining it is one of the most important things you can do to improve your health, and remain healthy.
